Lab Rats

toxic hell via godot all day everyday – there will be a minor role for drawings though.

I think the past few weeks I have neglected this site as anything beyond staring into the scripting of pixels seemed like a waste of precious minutes that could be used to both resolve and generate new bugs in a never ending cycle of what I hope is a learning process.

So, to start the month, and update, on a game, no drawings this entry. But next week, entry etc. drawing shall return I think…

Lets start with the testing lab.

I made 6 rooms to try out different mechanics and bits, as well as to make sure I can get the doors to all work and that the camera will shift into positions and hold, its all pretty rough, but I don’t expect this to perfect as I have never done this before.

Rat abuse is probably mandatory in all labs by now, rats are kinda gross, but it is uncalled for.

Testing boxes, ladders, dialogue, items etc. The basics are pretty functional finally, but I need a lot more polish and tweaking.

This is the hardest bit, I am trying to make my human enemy template by sorta making a variation on the players code. But also taking many liberties with its abilities since it can be more interesting and varied.

One day he will be a very simple fighter, for now he is just rather confused and prone to outburst. But at least he seems mostly to look in the right direction.

Basic library of power ups, to be doled out sparingly at some point.

Semi functioning death sequence, pay up to live.

Testing for very basic physics in here, de-tangle some code, throw it on a big head and see how it works.

Barf City – Yet More Barf

I had hoped to draw more, but instead was consumed with scribbling down ideas for some manner of beat em up meets RPG meets platformer, ‘Super Double Zelda Dragon Ransom Bros. 2’ = BARF_CITY, and I cannot code for shit, but I hope some ‘charm’ will arise from this, can code be like ‘outsider art’, Henry Darger, but a game, that honestly would be a better game, just take his whole “The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What Is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion“, it’s all in the title, player characters, enemies, NPCs, settings, shit, I should have started with this.

All that said, this week I did manage a bit more hunching over paper and less hunching over keyboard, and hopefully some new balance shall occur, cause I think I get it now that this will not be done anytime soon, some dream of a balanced enemy vs player schematic can be found then built upon is probably nonsense.

Kurzarbeit is Best Arbeit

Working 9.6 hours a week is about as good as it gets. Remainder of hours spent awake are divided randomly across a few things worthy of exposing to the internet.

1. Spend much too much time learning to make a pixel platformer which now morphs into an actionRPG (it is the next tutorial in the list) and then hopefully if I can manage it, one day… a RiverCityRansom-esque brawler, in a 90’s TacoBell.

I also made the little beer can, or what aims to be a beer can, its a tribute to “Natty Lite”, as this game will be set in a vague and very humid memory of Florida, and so, yes Natty it is. That said, I have not made it to the part where you can interact with any object, so its just stuck there for now…

Doing this by copying along to HeartBeast’s tutorials, very easy to follow along with if you have any inclination toward making something with Godot.


2. Return of the Glitching Wreckage.

I made this “glitch bot”, I wanna say… last year-ish probably, and it was good-ish for about an hour, than it got real stale like. I didn’t know how to really pull in some randomness. I think I could do a better job now, and that thinking is half the effort, it will require a day or so of work, but it could be something interesting and an excuse to sharpen skills which really aren’t even worthy of the knife metaphor in use there, more like continue effort to have knife like skills, right now butter is safe against these programming efforts.

3. Are you still drawing those pictures?

– Yes. Yes, I am afraid I still am drawing “those pictures”.

Ah yes, the finest waste of time imaginable, if you think your identity is a bit lame now, and could use that air of prepackaged creative free spirit, grab your watercolors, pens and assorted mediums and become an ARTIST.

How lame? This lame.

Trying to get back to this big one, the original “WIP_2020” I was so definitely going to make this year and have done on time and really for real just make a yearly pattern out of making such a piece.

And the new pencil work is progressing, not enough to be re-scanned, but enough for a solid lazy photo from my phone.

Sketching is better than reading the news in the morning.

Ok now for the rest.

And this mess behind the studio building ain’t helping. So much noise.

I can’t say I did much this week, I am not sure where it went or when weeks begin and end, the axis is skewed as of late, mostly weighted in a direction that favors me, yet it seems to slide into places unplanned.

I’ll just post a couple bits therefore.

 

As well I guess most effort went back into what once held the glorious title of “Untitled 2020”. Which once again is another piece which starts up with my usual ‘Man walks into a bar’ setup and I hope to wind up at a new punchline, the man in question is emaciated and has a deal about civilization and plans for wheat, and probably books on the best use and case situations for cages. “Great Man of History” or something to that effect.

More evidence that scanners are magical.

 

I can read so sometimes I do.

All else fails, yellow works. A replacement midtone, semi opaque. Covers up the mistakes (kinda), people like color, and actually gives a nice Simpsons-esque quality to the drawing with a slight bit of the jaundice.

As for the rest of this post, let’s go with the sketches and some studio shots, all handled loosely as looser hands is the aim as of late, to try and wrest back some pre ink based hatching tendons, I once upon a time could shade with a pencil in that way that is like soft and not by scratching lines into paper. “Naturalistic”, like quasars n’ shit.

Also, comic page, about waking up in “spaghettie”, in Seattle I think… I never worked in a real 7-11, just “Lil’ Champ”, Amoco, Shell?, and some other lame pretenders to the throne.

Is this even worth posting?

The whole thing finally pieced digitally together, half a year after completing it.

Finished the drawing above about 6 months ago, ripped up a scanner in order to get it scanned in somewhat, that still left some distortions in place, and needs a remake. The tough part was the top part of this, seemed like everything wanted to reject patching it together, figured out finally that there was a segment of it that for some reason was 150dpi, not 300, or 300 and not 600 depending on the folder, but somehow the original source was 50%. Should have noticed it sooner, and anyways, done now.

Second issue today fixed/found, WordPress loves to compress images, in order to make it stop you have to edit the themes functions.php file (in “Theme Editor” click on Theme Functions (function.php) on the right-hand side) and then add this at the end:
